## The wrong way first — six SSIDs and a spreadsheet

             War story · what NOT to do
             Sneha at Infosys  inherited a campus with  six  SSIDs — Staff, Guest, Contractors, Printers, CCTV, and IoT — each pinned to its own VLAN and ACL. Every new branch meant manually re-typing all six on every controller. Roaming was flaky, the 2.4 GHz band was congested with beacons, and a single typo on VLAN 40 took down the printers in Pune for a day.

         That is the old controller-era model:  more SSIDs = more control . It feels safe and is actually the trap. Every extra SSID burns airtime on beacons, and copy-paste config across sites guarantees drift. Mist flips this:  one  WLAN template , one or two SSIDs, and policy that decides access by who you are — not which SSID you joined.  The decision engine for "who reaches what" is  WxLAN .

## ① WLAN Templates — one object, many sites

         A  WLAN template  bundles your SSIDs, security settings, and WxLAN policies into one reusable object. You build it once at  Organization &gt; Wireless | WLAN Templates , click  Create Template , name it, then add at least one WLAN (SSID name, Security Type, VLAN). The magic is the  scope : a template is not global by accident — you point it at exactly the sites that should receive it.

"Except for" is purpose-built for "everyone minus a few". Option c works but is brittle and high-effort at 40 sites; "Limited to" filters by AP device profile, not sites; two templates doubles maintenance. Keep one source of truth. ## ② WPA3 & Security — SAE, OWE, Multi-PSK Inside the template, each WLAN gets a Security Type . The three you must know cold: WPA3-Personal ( SAE ) — a passphrase network, but the handshake is dragonfly-based, so capturing it no longer lets an attacker brute-force the PSK offline. Use for staff if you are not yet on 802.1X.

- OWE Transition — encryption on an open guest network with no password. Mist auto-creates a hidden OWE SSID alongside the open one, so you do not break legacy clients or fast roaming. Mandatory if you want open Wi-Fi on the 6 GHz band.

- Multi-PSK — many passphrases on one SSID, each mappable to a different VLAN or role. For WPA3 Multi-PSK to key correctly, the client MAC or MAC OUI must be pre-associated with its passphrase.

The WPA3 transition-mode trap Symptom you see: after flipping the staff SSID to "WPA3 transition" (WPA2+WPA3 mixed), a cluster of Android 9 phones, some Marvell-chipset Surface tablets, and Intel AX211 laptops with 802.11r enabled either can't connect at all or roam-loop and drop. Cause: transition mode advertises both AKMs; old clients mis-handle the WPA3 element or the FT key-selection picks the wrong PMK. Fix: keep WPA3 on the modern SSID and put the legacy/IoT gear on a separate WPA2 SSID on 2.4/5 GHz — don't downgrade the whole estate to rescue a few devices. Pause & predict You want open guest Wi-Fi on the new 6 GHz band. The standard forbids plain open SSIDs there. What does Mist do when you pick OWE Transition? Reveal Mist auto-creates a hidden OWE SSID alongside the broadcast open SSID, and adds an information element to the beacon pointing to it. Old clients still see open; OWE-capable clients use the encrypted hidden one. You don't hand-build two SSIDs (which would break fast roaming) — one OWE-Transition WLAN does it. Quick check · Q2 of 10 A campus needs WPA3 for staff laptops but also has 30 old barcode scanners that only speak WPA2 and keep failing on the WPA3-transition SSID. What's the cleanest Mist design? a) Downgrade the whole staff SSID back to WPA2 so the scanners work b) Keep staff on WPA3-Personal (SAE); add a separate Legacy/IoT SSID on WPA2 (2.4/5 GHz) for the scanners c) Force the scanners onto 6 GHz with OWE d) Disable 802.11r everywhere and leave transition mode on Correct: b. Isolate legacy gear on its own WPA2 SSID — don't punish modern clients by downgrading. Scanners can't reach 6 GHz (c) and have no OWE; disabling FT (d) hurts roaming for everyone without fixing the WPA2-only radios. ## ③ Labels & WxLAN — who reaches what Now the heart of the lesson. A label in Mist is a named bucket. Instead of writing "users whose RADIUS Filter-Id = HR" in ten rules, you make a label once and reuse it. There are two families: User labels (the left side of a rule) — match on AAA Attribute (RADIUS Filter-Id , aruba-user-role , Airespace-ACL-Name , Mist User Group , or RADIUS Username ), an Access Point , a Wi-Fi Client , or a WLAN .

         Create them at  Organization &gt; Wireless | Labels → Add Label : pick a  Label Type , enter the  Label Values , click  Create . Then a  WxLAN policy  is just rows: user labels on the left, resource labels on the right, with an Allow or Deny action.

- First rule whose USER labels all match → that rule's resources apply. Stop. Drag specific rules ABOVE broad ones. The default row at the bottom catches the unmatched. Org WLAN-template policy is evaluated before any site-level policy for the same client. First user-label match wins and short-circuits the rest. ▶ Play Next ▶ ↺ Reset The #1 WxLAN trap — "my label isn't in the drop-down" Symptom you see: you open the WLAN-template policy, click + to add a user label, and the label you just made isn't listed. Cause: you created it at the site level. A WLAN-template policy is organization-scoped, so it only shows organization labels . Re-create the label under Organization > Wireless | Labels and it appears. Site labels only work in the site-level policy ( Site > Wireless | Policy ). Pause & predict An org WLAN-template rule allows Staff → ERP. A site admin later adds a site-level rule that blocks Staff → ERP at the Pune site. A staff user in Pune connects. Can they reach ERP? Reveal Yes — they reach ERP. The org template policy is evaluated first; the Staff→ERP allow already matched, so the site rule never runs. Site rules only fire when no org-template rule matched the client. To block ERP in Pune you must change it at the template (e.g. an AP/site label) — not bolt on a site rule that's already pre-empted. ## ④ Micro-Segmentation — one SSID, many roles Micro-segmentation is the payoff. Instead of Sneha's six SSIDs, you run one or two and let labels split traffic by role. Two levers do it: Allow/Deny resource sets — HR reaches the HR file server; Guests reach only the Internet; cameras reach nothing off-segment. All on one SSID.

- WxLAN VLAN override — a rule can place a labeled user group onto a specific VLAN. You build a user label (e.g. student-psk matching User Group = student ) on the left and a VLAN label (e.g. vlan5 , VLAN ID 5 ) on the right, then enable the rule.

             Three things that make VLAN-override work

              1.  The VLAN must already exist — in the WLAN's VLAN list, the AP  ETH0  port config, or a Mist Tunnel.  2.  APs need firmware  0.14.29091  or newer for WxLAN VLAN assignment.  3.  Use  organization  labels if the rule lives in a WLAN template; only those show in the template drop-down. Then click the ellipsis (…) to enable the rule.
